The Importance of Battery Balancing


Battery balancing is a challenge we face every day in daily use. When the battery is internally unbalanced, it may cause many problems. A common problem is that the overall capacity is reduced. Due to the barrel theory, one cell will always discharge its power before other cells. This means that even if the remaining cells have power, the BMS will cut off the power for the purpose of protecting the cells, which is manifested in a significant reduction in battery capacity. In addition, if this is done frequently, the service life will be shortened.


The importance of battery balancing extends beyond the device itself. It also has security implications. An unbalanced battery increases the risk of overheating and potential fire or explosion. When some batteries are overcharged and others undercharged, excess energy is produced, leading to thermal runaway, an uncontrollable rise in temperature within the battery. This dangerous situation highlights why we should pay enough attention.


To prevent these problems, it is crucial to regularly monitor the voltage of lithium batteries. Some devices have active balance or passive Balance, but for those devices without a balancing system, we can take some steps ourselves. One method is to regularly discharge and fully charge the battery to help equalize the cell voltages within the battery pack. Another option is to use a dedicated charger or balance board designed to maintain proper battery voltage levels. By taking proactive steps to maintain battery balance, we can ensure optimal battery performance and safety for as long as possible


Understanding battery imbalance:


A key factor in battery imbalance is the slight difference in the internal resistance of each cell. Because of this difference, some batteries may discharge faster than others, resulting in uneven energy distribution. In addition, usage habits also play an important role in causing battery imbalance. For example, frequently only partially charging or fully discharging a battery before use can cause further damage to individual cells and cause overall balance issues.


Recognizing the signs of battery imbalance is critical to effectively mitigating the problem. Common indicators include overheating during charging or discharging, reduced run time per charge cycle compared to previous performance levels, and inconsistent voltage readings between different cells within the pack. Paying close attention to these signs will allow users to take appropriate action to correct any imbalance encountered.


Signs of an imbalanced battery:


 One of the most obvious signs of an unbalanced battery is an uneven charge or discharge rate. If you notice that one of your batteries is consistently draining faster than the others, this may indicate an imbalance. Also, if your device suddenly shuts down in some situations when the battery has enough power left, it is a clear indication that the battery is not working properly.


Another subtle sign of an imbalanced battery is a noticeable decrease in overall device performance. When a battery is unbalanced, its ability to deliver power efficiently is reduced. This may result in slower response times and reduced functionality of the device. For example, if you're using an electric vehicle and notice a decrease in range or acceleration compared to when you first purchased it, it could be due to a battery imbalance that's affecting overall performance.


What should we do if we encounter battery imbalance?


When a battery imbalance occurs, immediate action must be taken to prevent any potential damage or danger.


As a first step, we can find unbalanced batteries by measuring voltage. Often the voltage of a problem battery will be significantly different from other batteries.


In the second step, we have two ways to solve the balancing problem. The first is to fully charge all batteries and then reconnect them. This can basically solve all problems. If you are limited on time, you can choose to recharge or discharge batteries with significantly different voltages individually.


In the third step, when we reconnect, we need to ensure that the connections are tightly connected, and try to avoid the abnormal increase in resistance due to loose connections, which will bring about new balance problems, and this is prone to heat generation, and even fire hazards in severe cases. So we need to pay attention.


In short, battery balancing is an issue that we need to pay more attention to when using batteries, especially when they need to be connected in series or parallel.
